In college, I dreamed of becoming a YouTube celebrity.

I watched all the greats, PewDiepie, Smosh, Elliot Hulse, Simple Pick Up. You name the channel, I watched them.

Here were guys not only having millions of followers foaming at the mouth to hear what they had to say everyday, but actually being paid to do what they loved, like working out, playing video games and helping people.
There was only one problem. I had no idea what I was going to post about.

And if YouTube stardom was the dream, graduating college was the nightmare.

I wasn’t afraid of what my friends were, like making money with a “good” career.

In fact, I was actually scared OF that exact thing, making money with a “good career” being destined to be an Excel robot for the rest of my life.
I don’t know about you, but my time is very important to me. I did not want to go to a 9-5 job where more than half of my life was based on someone else’s schedule. I did not want to exchange my time for money.

Instead, I wanted the freedom to do the things I love doing, like traveling, working out and going out with my friends. Not just on weekends, but anytime I wanted, with my own rules and on my own terms.
I knew that if I followed the path my parents wanted for me, I would never get that freedom or happiness I craved.

And I knew that unless I went viral and fast, there’s no way they’d understand it. I’d have to have solid proof, like a 100,000 Insta-Followers or a Million YouTube fans to show mom and dad that I could make social media my career.
Of course, I’m not alone in this dream. Almost every 20-something year old I know wants to be a social media celebrity. Usually, we’ve thought about it for years, picturing how awesome it would be to have 50,000 subs on YouTube excited to hear what we have to say.

So how come almost none of us even START?

We may say it’s our lack of video editing skills, not having the right equipment or being bad at speaking on camera.
But deep down, we know the real problem is that we’re scared.

We’re scared what our friends will think of us, or what our family might say when they see our first few videos online

We’re worried that people won’t like our content because we aren’t interesting enough

We fear spending hours and hours to work on the perfect post, only to have 5 likes and 10 views, making us feel like it was a complete waste of time

I know this because I speak from experience. All these fears and worries kept me from starting my own social media channels for YEARS.
Every time I tried to start, all the worries and doubts exploded in my head:

Why would anyone listen to what you have to say?

There’s so much competition on YouTube. How will you stand out?

You’re a shy introvert that can barely talk to your classmates, how do you expect to be good on camera?

But again, the fear of having to get a real job after college pushed me to finally begin doing some serious planning and research my senior year of college.

I read every “social media hacks” article I could find, studied tech magazines and even attended those nerdy google conferences. After a lot of insight from fellow social media wannabes, I decided I would make my “niche” fitness.

Finally, I began posting some pictures on Instagram, shared my life on Facebook and made a few videos on YouTube.
I followed the conventional social media advice to a T…
“Stay in your niche! Don’t do anything outside of it!

Keep your IG descriptions short!

You HAVE to use a nice camera if you want to compete with the other channels!

Don’t make your videos too long!”
I was proud of the content I made, as I had spent extra hours in the library chopping and editing, making sure everything was perfect while my friends were out partying.

You know what I got?

Absolute crickets.
After 3 months, my most popular posts had 100 views and 20 likes, which every influencer I followed got literally within seconds of posting.

I felt extremely embarrassed. I went to a really small school, where everyone knew each other, so you can imagine what it was like to have classmates giggling over your pictures with 5 likes (most shirtless) or your cringey videos, laughing at how stupid they were.

My nightmare had come true: friends were making fun of me, classmates were judging me, and it all felt like a major waste of time.
“Maybe you’re just not cut out for this” I began thinking to myself. “Maybe your parents are right and you should just be happy you can even get a corporate job.”

I came extremely close to giving up. And if I hadn’t come across this 1 video in my “featured” YouTube feed, the 3,000,000+ followers I have now between YouTube, Facebook and Instagram would have never happened.

This video was made by Jeff Seid, a fitness YouTuber who was pretty famous at the time. In this particular video I was watching, he walked around with his shirt off and caught funny reactions from girls, usually dropping their jaws or in some cases, even licking his abs.
And at that very second the lightbulb went off instantly in my head.
Up until this point, everyone kept telling me:
“Pick a Niche”

“The Riches are in the Niches”

“Pick one thing and stick with it”
And up until that point, I just assumed they were right. But after seeing Jeff’s video, the big discovery came:
“What if I COMBINED niches, making my fitness channel not just about fitness (niche 1), but also picking up girls (2nd niche) through clever pranks (3rd niche)?”
I decided to start from scratch. I began studying all the best YouTubers and saw patterns I had never noticed before and instead of worrying about what camera they were using or how “natural” they were on video, I began asking different questions.
“Why do they use X type of title?”

“How come they put Y in the Thumbnail?”

“They’re using this in the intro every time, what’s the reasoning?”
Using my nerdy skills to my advantage, I made a spreadsheet of of all these most popular channels tendencies and decided I would tweak/improve them with my own unique style.
Next, I made a “YouTube Viral Checklist” of absolutely everything that needed to be in each video, based on what my research had shown me worked best.

Finally, in January of 2016, I put out my first video, using the data and strategies I had collected since my big discovery in Jeff’s video.

The results were INSANE.
Within a week, it went viral with 300,000 views and 10,000 likes.
So I decided to repeat the formula that I had discovered, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. I just rinsed and repeated the checklist, time and time again.

Sure enough, nearly every video I made went viral, and had at least 1,000,000 views at minimum.
In less than a year in a half, I surpassed a million subscribers with less than 60 videos, easily becoming the fastest growing fitness channel ever and quite possibly the fastest growing” YouTube channel ever (excluding celebrities and people coming from Vine)
The kids in my class weren’t laughing anymore. My parents and friends went from “Wtf are you doing” to becoming my biggest supporters, and my DM’s on Instagram from girls…well let’s just say I began seeing more messages like this one a LOT more often…

While all that was great, The best part was that I was actually helping people doing what I absolutely loved. Everyday I’d get messages saying how much I changed their lives and how my videos inspired them to become stronger, happier and more confident.

Within a year, I surpassed most of the channels I started out watching and had several of them actually contact ME, asking to hang out, collab and teach them how I got so big so fast.

One of these YouTubers was Brandon Carter, a major social media celebrity in his own right. With close to 2 million Facebook fans and over 100,000,000 views on YouTube Brandon had many social media secrets of his own.

In addition to that, since Brandon had a marketing degree from a top business school, he had also mastered how to monetize his fan base, something most influencers struggle heavily to do. In fact, he is part of the exclusive “2 comma club” which is earned when you make $1,000,0000 on Clickfunnels.
