This workout targets legs, thighs, and buttocks with effective standing exercises, such as squats and lunges (without weights), and some mat work. The workout is peppy and varied, presenting three eight-minute routines that get progressively more challenging. Many of these exercises also emphasize balance. For example, from a wide squat, lift both heels and then straighten the legs, keeping the heels off the ground.
Another example: lift up from a wide squat by lifting one leg out to the side. One exerciser demonstrates modifications, including using a dowel or broomstick for balance help. Other exercises include traditional floor work for buns (pressing one foot up from hands-and-knees position, for example) and legs. Level 3 adds some “power” moves such as jumps at the end of squats. Kathy Kaehler is a friendly, skilled instructor, and the variety of exercises will keep you from getting bored targeting the lower body. –Joan Price
