When I first released Combat Conditioning some three years ago, it immediately received rave reviews. Before I knew it thousands and thousands of people from all walks of life and from all over the world, had invested in my program. Word spread quickly about the amazing benefits and this led to me being featured in multi-page spreads in Black Belt, Grappling, Combat Fitness, Martial Arts & Combat Sports, Journal of Asian Martial Arts – as well as other periodicals throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, England – even in Poland.
But in the midst of all of the acclaim, there was one comment made to me by my friend, Mike, who also happens to be a personal trainer, that stuck in my craw.
After receiving his copy he called to say how much he liked it. But then, after I thanked him for the compliment, he said, “Matt, you need to make this into a lesson-by-lesson course that leads people by the hand and shows them what to do, step-by-step, day in and day out.”
I liked the idea – but there was a problem. I just flat out didn’t want to do it. Sure, the notion came to mind from time to time, but it was too much work to put the course together the way I would want it done – so I blew it off.
Well then, why the change now?
Good question. Here’s the answer: Last week I had a client come to town to get certified as a Combat Conditioning instructor. During the six hours we spent together, I corrected his form, answered his questions – and explained in great detail much of what is not in the book.
I explained what to do if your shoulders hurt when doing pushups. I explained variations of Hindu pushups and squats. I taught him many, many exercises and supplementary details that I had never taught anyone before.
I covered how to train the beginner, as well as the intermediate and more advanced. When our time together was over I returned home, grabbed a copy of my best-selling book, locked myself in my office and went through it again and again. I literally told my wife that I was not to be disturbed until I had this whole thing sorted out. Let me tell you, I wouldn’t even let me son Frank in to see me – and that was pure agony. But it had to be done for me to get clear on what I wanted.

At any rate, I spent three days going over everything I know, everything I’ve learned since the book came out. I made tons of notes on a yellow pad as well as in the book itself. I went over all the things I wanted to alter, improve, remove, add to or change.
By the time I was finished, I was exhausted. I hit the sack and slept for 15 hours straight. At the end of it all I was so excited about my new project that I thought about scraping my best-selling Combat Conditioning to just concentrate on the new course. My wife Zhannie and I then got into a fight about this idea. How dare I scrap a best-selling book that still kicks butt and is better than everything else out on the market?
Our battle lasted for a few days – then I conceded. “Okay, okay,” I said. “You’re right. I don’t need to make my best-selling book disappear. I just need to let everyone know that Gama Fitness is the advanced, personalized, step-by-step course that will blow the barn doors off everything else I have put out to date.”
Combat Conditioning is still head and shoulders above everything else out there – but Gama Fitness … to borrow a line from StarTrek, “goes where no man has gone before.” It is simply the best work I have ever put out, bar none.
