One trend that has rapidly caught on is digital streaming workouts. This trend shows where the future of fitness is headed by giving anyone the ability to work out with just their mobile device in-hand. This new spin on exercise tapes that were popular in the 80’s brings both previously-recorded and live-streaming workouts from some of your favorite studios to any workout fanatic.

Peloton is pushing the envelope in setting fitness trends with their brick and mortar spin studio, the Peloton at-home spin bike, and digital streaming of classes. Another company differentiating themselves is Daily Burn as one of the top names in digital streaming workouts and content. One more company seeking to set the tone for the future of fitness is FORTE. They’ve partnered with many fitness facilities to live stream their workouts.

New kinds of variety.

It’s more than just digital streaming that’s beginning to shift the landscape of what fitness fanatics will accept as a workout. Working out more than just your muscles, but your mind, as well, is gaining steam as we learn more about the influence our brains have over our body’s overall health.

When this is offered, it is referred to as resilience in the corporate wellness industry. One brick and mortar fitness facility taking this head on and building the framework for future locations focused on mindfulness is Inscape. This studio offers different meditation spaces in the heart of New York City. Another studio looking to change mindsets on how to workout is STRIDE. This studio offers treadmill based workouts in a group setting, which make the standard solo run on a treadmill seem quite bland.

One area that has truly yet to be seen is how well consumers will adopt the use of virtual and augmented reality to help them meet their fitness goals. Wynadotte Athletic Club has been offering virtual reality fitness experiences since September of 2016 and is one of the few to make this available. There are also companies like Black Box VR who label themselves as “a fully immersive virtual reality gym experience”.

The staying power of these three is yet to be seen, but consumers will be the ones to help dictate the future of fitness in this area.

No matter what the future of fitness holds, two pillars remain at the forefront of trends. First, the mentality of group support and positive peer pressure has withstood significance through the previous decades and currently doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
